How a MAGICIAN Gave Me the BEST Birthday Party of My Childhood!

I’m not kidding. When I was a kid my parents always made it a point to make sure I had a nice birthday party every year. There was one special party that I’ll never forget though… The year they hired a magician…

First, let me introduce myself. My name is Matthew Jones (AKA, Mystical Matthew). I started in magic over ten years ago when I was just 13 (that puts me in my mid twenties if you’re counting). I perform on stage with my mother, Nanci Jones (AKA, The Great Nancini). Our family relationship on stage is part of what makes us unique, but I’ll get to that later.

As a kid, I was pretty much always an outcast. I had Asthma, was overweight, and wasn’t good at sports. I was the last one picked for the team in gym class, and I got made fun of a lot. During recess I would take a book outside with me and read because nobody wanted to play with me.

I’m not trying to make you feel sorry for me. Every kid goes through this in their own way. We all have struggles and difficulties. Mine were just more noticeable because they were physical.

Growing up is a hard and painful process. That’s why it’s so important to make your son or daughters childhood special.

You and I both know that when those years are gone, they are lost forever. They’re wonderful, magical years filled with innocence and wonder. Now is the time to make memories for your child, before the pain and angst of adolescence kicks in. Your best opportunities to influence their lives for the better are right now. Do it before they’re driving and embarrassed to be seen with you at the mall.

Like I said… I was an outcast. I didn’t really fit in with anyone and I only had a small handful of friends. My parents saw this, and I know it broke their hearts. I think a parent’s natural instinct is to want only the best for their child. I believe it’s true that when a child hurts, the parent hurts twice as much. That’s why they worked so hard to make birthdays so special for me.

One year they hired a magician to perform at my party. I don’t remember how old I was, but I remember the experience of that party. I remember how the magic captivated my imagination. I remember how good it felt to have the other kids happy and excited to be at my party. Most of all, I remember how special the magician made me feel.

I wouldn’t start my journey to become a full fledged magician until years later, but that show bit me with the magic bug. It’s a fond childhood memory I have that I’ll carry with me all of my life. In fact, several of my friends mentioned that show at my high school graduation party in 2002.

I didn’t realize it until years later, but that birthday party magic show helped shape the course of my entire life.

When I decided to become a professional magician, I vowed to make every child’s birthday magic show as special as my own.

Every child needs a special moment. Every child needs an opportunity to be a star. Every child needs a chance to be in the limelight. Every child needs a chance to be the hero with a cool birthday party (and possibly even COOLER parents!).

Every child needs a memory they can cherish forever.

You need to know that we take this VERY seriously. Children have a soft spot in our hearts. I know for a fact that magic transformed me into who I am today. This isn’t just about doing a magic show for us. This is about giving your child a treasured experience that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.

Are we magicians? Absolutely, but we are more than just “a show”. We’re as interested in making your child’s birthday party a success as you are. We want to partner with you to make this experience happen. We’re in this to make a difference.

This is the major difference between us and other magicians.

Be careful what kind of magician you hire. We’re not all created equal!

This is a common mistake that many parents seem to make. I don’t want YOU to fall into this trap. Magicians are kind of like apples… There are countless varieties. Remember, we want to create a powerful, lasting experience for your child. We’ve built and polished a show designed to do just that!

The gentleman who performed at my birthday party recognized that you need to focus on the children and make the birthday kid feel special. If he hadn’t done that, do you think my show would have been as special? I really doubt it.

There are a lot of magicians out there who are just focused on themselves and the impressive tricks they can do. That’s all well and good, but it doesn’t make for a very entertaining show! The kids very quickly get bored and antsy.

This is especially prevalent among young magicians just starting out. We all have to start somewhere, but those shows are inevitably boring and easily forgotten… That’s not the experience we’re looking for.

Another pitfall is the “professional” who usually works for adults and just does kids shows for “fast cash”. Inevitably these guys will talk down to the kids and treat them with little respect. Children can sense that a mile away.

To make your child’s birthday REALLY SPECIAL you’ll need someone who can reach them at their level and remain COMPLETELY FOCUSED on making their experience absolutely incredible!

I mentioned my mother / co-star earlier “The Great Nancini”. As soon as I left my own “awkward stage” we discovered that we work well together on stage! The family dynamic really plays out in every show and helps the audience get to know us!

For birthday parties this REALLY works out well! As you can imagine “Nancini” has quite a bit of natural motherly instinct that works to her advantage. She intuitively knows how to work with children, connect with them, and make them comfortable! I know this because I have firsthand experience!

On the other hand, I connect easily with kids because I understand their interests, likes, and dislikes! I legitimately love children. I don’t have any of my own (yet) but I know they’re likes, dislikes, and how to make them laugh! (I guess it also helps that I still watch cartoons and play video games… I stopped myself from buying a pair of moon shoes the other day).

The bottom line is that we’re professionals who know how to entertain and inspire children. Everything including our sound equipment, backdrop, and props is professional. We’re in this for the long haul. With any luck we’ll be around to entertain your grandchildren too…
